Central Railway CPRO Shivaji Sutar said that pilot Surekha Yadav will now drive regular Bande Bharat Express trains during her scheduled duty.
Surekha Yadav was felicitated at platform number 8 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. Pilot Surekha Yadav expressed her gratitude to the senior railway officer for giving her the opportunity to drive the country’s fastest train, the blue and white colored Bande Bharat Express. On Monday the train leaves Solapur at 06:05 and reaches the destination 5 minutes earlier i.e. at 12:30 (arriving at CSMT at 12:35).
Railway Minister praised the power of women
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnab also congratulated the country’s first pilot Surekha Yadav for driving the train and praised the power of women. He said in a tweet through the social media platform that Vande Bharat – Powered by Nari Shakti i.e. Vande Bharat Express train is now running on the railways under the leadership of a female pilot. In the same tweet, the railway minister also said that the Bande Bharat Express train was piloted by Surekha Yadav, the country’s first woman loco pilot.

Born on 2nd September 1965 in Maharashtra, Surekha Yadav received her primary education from St. Paul’s Convent High School in Satara district of the state. After completing her studies from here, Surekha enrolled in a vocational training course. Later he did Diploma in Electrical Engineering. Satara resident Surekha Yadav became the country’s first woman train driver i.e. loco pilot in 1988. For this achievement, he has been honored with many awards at the state and national levels. Surekha has the distinction of being Asia’s first female railway driver i.e. female loco pilot. Now she has also become the first woman loco pilot of the country’s fastest running Vande Bharat Express train.

The train that loco pilot Surekha Yadav will run regularly is the 9th Bande Bharat Express in the country. On February 10, 2023, Prime Minister Modi flagged off the train, which ran at a high speed on the country’s railways. Bande Bharat Trains has worked to reduce the travel time of rail passengers traveling between Mumbai and Solapur. During the journey, Maharashtra’s first semi-high speed train passes through important pilgrimage sites like Siddheshwar in Solapur, Akkalkot, Tuljapur, Pandharpur near Solapur and Alandi near Pune. Bande Bharat train covers a distance of 400 km between Mumbai to Solapur in just 06:30 hrs. During the journey, the Vande Bharat train stops between two stations at Dadar, Kalyan, Pune and Kurdubadi.
